Pasolini (1974) considered the urban and natural contexts as the same issue to deal with. Nature is a heritage to be protected, but Nature is also an important resource for the regeneration of the existing city and its adaptation to climate change. Natural Capital has a double value as an asset: on the one hand, it is a legacy (patrimoine) from our fathers; on the other, it is a heritage (heredium) for the next generations. However, its current value must be re-actualized. Through the examination of two Italian case studies in Rome and Naples, the paper seeks to create an integrated vision between ecology and urban planning, to combine the adaptation and protection of historic cities boosting new wealth and (material/immaterial) value for the community. The aim is to point out some best practices around the role of green spaces as a historical, identity, cultural, environmental and socio-economic heritage. We would like to show the importance of green spaces, within and around the city, for an urban planning approach based on the integrated design of the historical and environmental frames.
